Start-Up Hope

What is the video about?

The Start-Up Hope video shares the struggle of a transman moving from a difficult to a better life. The misconception in Khmer society of LGBTQI persons as having no future and unable to  do business will change through understanding their lived experience and reality. The video will also be an example for other LGBTQI persons to try their best in life because they can see Mr. Sorn Neoun’s achievements. Neoun is from a low class, and has more experiences to overcome to move to a better level. He will share his challenges, experience of the Covid-19 crisis, opportunities, successes, and solutions in his life as an entrepreneur. The video also adds vox-pops of five people’s ideas at the beginning and a message from a representative of MRIF Cambodia.

Why did we choose to showcase Start-Up Hope

With this video want to:

  • initiate discussions about LGBTQI inclusion in the private sector and encourage the private sector in Cambodia to include LGBTQI persons in their institutions;
  • reduce the misconception of LGBTQI persons as having no future and unable to  do business;
  • stop all forms of discrimination against LGBTQI people in the workplace, in the economic or any other sector so that they are able to contribute to all areas of development of our society.

Blue Chili

What is the video about?

Blue Chili is a gay friendly bar which is a model of diversity, inclusion in the workplace and a safe space for everyone. The video focuses on a successful LGBTIQ entrepreneur, how they became successful, the challenges they faced (including the challenge of Covid19), the support they received, their contribution to LGBTQI equality, and their recommendations for society on the economic empowerment of LGBTQI people. The documentary shows the crucial role of entrepreneurs in LGBTQI activism in Cambodia.

Why did we choose to showcase Blue Chili?

The video production features Blue Chili as an example of an LGBTQI business, its important role in LGBTQI history and its role in making LGBTQI issues visible in Cambodia.  In this video we call for the creation of non-discrimination policies in the workplace for LGBTQI people.  We also show that, against common believes in Cambodia, LGBTQI people are able to legally startup businesses and become successful.

The Open Door

What is the video about?

The Open Door video shares how LGBTQI inclusion in the workplace will benefit the private sector. The video features the view of employers who include LGBTQI in the workplace, their LGBTQI employees, and a representative of an NGO. It is the first step in raising awareness by producing a video to share publicly on the economic empowerment of LGBTQI in Cambodia. We believe that people will improve their knowledge of LGBTQI economic empowerment and start to do small things to contribute to LGBTQI economic empowerment.

Why did we choose to showcase The Open Door?

We want to encourage the private sector in Cambodia to include LGBTQI persons in their institutions.  We believe that the private sector can create higher profits if they have an LGBTQI non-discrimination policy in the workplace. We also want to contribute to raising awareness about the real lived experience of the rainbow community in accessing job opportunities. Finally, we want more employers to keep the door open for every single person to have equal opportunities for getting a better job.
